Food Stamps/SNAP

Well over 900,000 people live below the federal poverty line in Missouri.  These individuals and families must often choose between buying food or paying for other basic needs like housing, heating, or healthcare.  The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps) can help these families afford to buy nutritious food and allow them to use their financial resources for other necessities.

SNAP Works

SNAP is the largest government nutrition assistance program, and research has shown that participating in SNAP plays a critical role not only in fighting hunger but also in improving the diet and health of participants.

SNAP also grows local economies – each one dollar in federally funded SNAP benefits generates $1.79 in economic activity.

Do I qualify for SNAP?

You may qualify if your income and other resources are under certain limits.  New changes to the food stamp program have increased the maximum income limits, allowed a higher utility deduction, and have eliminated some assets from the calculation.  You can have a car, a house, and/or some savings and still be eligible.

f you are undocumented, and have children who are US citizens, you can apply for food stamps on their behalf.
