Ending hunger in America is not just about developing and implementing strategies to advance our mission. Sometimes it’s trying to stop the problem from getting bigger. Today, we are asking our supporters to call their Members of Congress for this very reason.
This week, the House and Senate are expected to vote on budget resolutions that would attempt to balance the budget in 10 years. Balancing the budget is certainly a laudable goal, but when Congress tries to do it by cutting programs that our clients rely on—programs that advance our mission—we feel the need to say something. The budget should be balanced without putting the burden on low-income Americans.
Today we are organizing a national call-in day, asking anyone who believes in a hunger-free America to call their Members of Congress and urge them to oppose any attempts to cut hunger-relief programs in the budget. It’s so easy to forget what these programs actually do—put meals on the table and help people get on the path out of poverty. I believe that is worth fighting for, so I will be calling Congress today.

- 1. Just dial our toll free number, (888) 398-8702, listen to the pre-recorded message and enter your zip code when prompted.
- 2. Once you are connected to your first Member of Congress, state that you are a constituent, and give your name and the town you are calling from.
- 3. Let them know you are calling about the budget and deliver this important message:
“As your constituent, I am calling you today to ask you to vote against any efforts to cut or block-grant hunger-relief programs like SNAP when you consider the budget resolution. SNAP benefits have already been cut twice in the last two years. Additional cuts will result in one thing—more hunger in America. Please find a more responsible way to balance the budget.”
