Starting this Sunday, Rotarians across the state will be uniting forces to help our neighbors in need during “Rotary Feeding Missouri.”

In planning for this campaign, I’ve gotten to learn about Rotary and the kind of people who join this very special organization. The most remarkable thing I’ve noted about Rotarians is summed up in their simple but powerful motto: Service above Self.

It takes a certain kind of person to put selfish needs and priorities on the shelf and put one’s focus entirely on serving the greater good.

One in five Missourians seeks assistance from our network. This is a quiet problem with very loud consequences that effect our health and education systems and our economy. Helping to feed the hungry in our state is helping Missouri as a whole. That is why every Missourian should share an interest in ending this problem.

Throughout February, Rotarians will be setting the example for us all by putting service above self in the giving of time, funds and food. If you’re a Rotarian, please stress Rotary Feeding Missouri as a priority in your club, and if you’re not a Rotarian, consider joining this fine organization. It may be the best thing you’ve ever done, and as Ghandi said, “The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
